Methodology

Our selection for Citation Laureates is based on a rigorous, data-driven approach using the Web of Science, a comprehensive resource of >34,000 scientific journals and trusted content from the world’s leading sources.

We focus on exceptionally highly cited papers, (>1,000 citations). These papers are extremely rare, representing just 0.06% of the approx. 61 million papers published since 1970, and just 9,700 (0.02 percent) have been cited more than 2,000 times.

Citation counts highlight influential discoveries, our analysts identify research associated with groundbreaking discoveries or advancements, typically recognized by Nobel committees.

Our qualitative analysis looks to prestigious predictor awards, such as the Lasker Awards in biomedicine, as early indicators of Nobel potential.
These accolades complement our citation-based analysis with peer-reviewed assessments of societal impact.

This combination of quantitative citation data with qualitative insights, points to research that has not only shaped academic fields but also holds potential for future Nobel recognition, ensuring our selections reflect both citation-based recognition and broader judgments of merit.

The result is a comprehensive, unique approach to identifying the researchers whose work truly confers the “greatest benefit to humankind.”
